5 popular local Ghanaian beverages (Non-alcoholic)

Sobolo / Bissap is a local juice made of dried hibiscus leaves (sorrel) ginger, cloves, sugar ans some fruit flavour if you want. The leaves are boiled with cloves and ginger. The juice is extract and some sugar is added. You can also add some fruit flavour to your sobolo for a fruity taste. Sobolo is enjoyed cold and it is cold along the streets.

Brukina is made of millet, cow milk and sugar. Ground millet is made into small pops and mixed with cow milk and sugar. They mostly sold along the streets and bus stations. Burkina is usually enjoyed when cold.

Asana is a local drink made of corn (maize) and sugar. Sugar is made into syrup and mixed with the stock of boiled fermented corn. The sugar gives it a dark brown colour. It tastes awesome with milk.

Zomkom is made of millet, cloves, ginger and some sugar to taste. It is very common in Muslim communities and in the Northern parts of Ghana. In the south, it is popularly known as lamurgee.

Ginger drink (Hausa beer). This is a tamarind ginger drink. It is common in Accra. Most non Muslims in Ghana call it lamurgee. It looks brownish and tastes spicy.

These local beverages can be enjoyed with savories or snacks. You can also enjoy some of these beverages in other places in West Africa. Sobolo is common in Nigeria, Zomkom is common in Burkina Faso, and Ginger drink (Hausa beer) is also common in Guinea.
